Chicano history dates back to the arrival of Spanish conquerors in the 16th century. During the 1900's Chicano theater flourished in Los Angeles, which is where the Zoot Suit riots primarily took place. Their productions of musical revues and zarzuelas coincided with serious issues particular to Chicano communities. Zoot Suit the play is built upon issues that greatly affected Chicano culture, and especially the custom of wearing zoot suits which turned into a way of discrimination against them during WWII because fabric was supposed to be rationed. This play does a wonderful job of tying in the aspects of Chicano theater, with their vibrant music, Spanish language, dancing, and culture which is intertwined in a real life event of the Sleepy Lagoon murder and Zoot Suit Riots. The character of Pachuco fits the aspect of interchanging between English and Spanish; words and phrases are constantly mixed together. His role does a fantastic job of creating the balance between the discrimination they faced and the opportunities they also had. Overall, this play incorporates a great amount of eye-opening ideals of what it means to be Chicano, also while displaying the accomplishments of their communities.
